What Does Respondus Monitor Record on Mac? (Webcam, Mic, Screen - Detailed)
The four recording streams
1. Webcam video
- Captured: Continuously from start of exam until submit/exit.
- Resolution: 480p or 720p depending on your camera and bandwidth (Monitor adapts).
- Codec: H.264 typically; modern macOS hardware encoding.
- Frame rate: ~15-30 fps (variable; Monitor backs off if bandwidth is constrained).
- Audio track: Combined with microphone in the same MP4 container.
- What's visible: Your face, your immediate background, and anyone/anything that comes into the camera frame.
2. Microphone audio
- Captured: Continuously, same window as video.
- Codec: AAC, 64-128 kbps.
- What's captured: Your voice, your room's ambient sound, anyone speaking nearby.
- Behavioral analysis: Monitor flags "second voice detected", "talking", "music playing", "sustained background noise".
3. Periodic screen captures
- Captured: Every ~30 seconds AND at every exam page transition.
- Resolution: Native screen resolution, scaled to JPEG (typical 1920x1080 → ~200 KB JPEG).
- What's visible: Whatever's on your Mac's screen - primarily the exam interface (kiosk mode), plus any other windows still rendering (rare during kiosk mode).
- Behavioral analysis: Flags window-switch attempts, blank-screen events, unusual content.
4. Pre-exam artifacts
- ID photo: single JPEG of you holding your student ID near the camera. Captured once before the exam timer starts.
- Environment scan: short video (5-15 seconds) of you panning the camera around your immediate exam area. Some institutions skip this step.
What instructors actually see when reviewing
The Respondus Dashboard's instructor review interface presents:
- A timeline scrubber over the webcam video.
- The audio track synced to video.
- Flagged moments highlighted (face missing, second voice, suspicious behavior, window-switch attempt).
- A "suspicious score" composite at the top of each session.
- The screen captures synced to the timeline.
- The ID photo and environment scan inline.
An instructor can typically watch a 60-minute exam in 10-15 minutes by scrubbing through and focusing on flagged moments.
What happens to flagged sessions
The "suspicious" score is informational, not deterministic. Most institutions have a policy where:
- Sessions below a threshold (e.g. score < 40) are auto-cleared.
- Sessions above the threshold are reviewed by the instructor.
- The instructor decides whether the flagged behavior is benign (e.g. you scratched your face = "face missing 2s") or warrants escalation.
- Escalation goes to academic integrity office, not directly to grade reduction.
Documented per Respondus's instructor guidance: the score is "guidance", not "judgement".
Recording quality issues we've observed
- Lighting: low light → fewer features detected → higher false-positive face-missing flags.
- Camera angle: cameras pointing up at chin look "suspicious" to face detector.
- Glasses with reflective coating: catch screen glare; can confuse face detector.
- Headphones / earbuds: occasionally flagged as "second voice" because the audio leaks back through the room.
- Background noise: roommates, traffic, music are all "audio anomalies".
Privacy implications
- Anything visible in the webcam frame is recorded. Be deliberate about what's behind you.
- Anything audible in the microphone area is recorded. Be deliberate about who else is in the room.
- The recording is associated with your name and student ID, not anonymous.
- The recording persists for the institutional retention period (typically 5 years).
- The recording can be subpoenaed under legal process.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see my own recording after the exam?
Not directly through the LMS in most cases. You can request access via Respondus's privacy contact under CCPA / GDPR / FERPA right of access. Response within 30-45 days.
Will the recording detect my pet walking by?
Yes - Monitor's face detection flags "second presence" any time a non-primary face or motion-source enters the frame. Pets, family members, anyone walking by will trigger a flag. Most instructors recognise these as benign.
Can the instructor download my recording?
Per Respondus's instructor interface, recordings are streamed for review, not downloaded by default. Some institutions allow download for academic integrity proceedings.
Does Monitor record while I'm in the bathroom break (if my exam allows breaks)?
If the camera is pointed at your seat, it records the empty seat. If you tilt the camera or take the laptop, it records what's in frame. Monitor doesn't pause for breaks; some exams disable breaks entirely.
